Jim Nolan lives and works in Houston, TX. He received a B.F.A . from Virginia Commonwealth University and a M.F.A. from Massachusetts College of Art.
Nolan has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, DEEPSPACENEWYORK, and has had solo shows at the Soap Factory, Minneapolis; MN.ArtMoving, Brooklyn, NY; Art Palace Gallery, Houston, TX.
My work is based on what happens in the studio. What I make is directly related to my
immediate surroundings and the space I work in. My relationship to art history (Minimalism in
particular), punk music culture and my background working in the commercial film industry have all had a direct influence on how I think about and approach my work.
I am interested in the limits of what can constitute an artwork. Focusing on process and
material, I attempt to demystify art making by using everyday materials and by questioning the validity of craftsmanship. In this way, I bring the value of the art object into question and re-frame notions of good and bad.
